Nano-4-Rem Inaugural Workshop

On June 5-6, members of the LSU Superfund Research Program Research Translation Core attended the Nano- 4- Rem workshop at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. The inaugural workshop focused on understanding and meeting information and technology needs to prevent exposures to engineered nano-particles. The workshop provided a chance for representatives from the environmental remediation community, industry, academia, and government to share thoughts and ideas on work practices that support nano enabled environmental remediation and also gave participants an opportunity to become acquainted with other nanotechnology stakeholders. Participants from diverse groups and organizations gave presentations on topics within the nano technology field, including representatives from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Louisiana area offices of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Louisiana State University, University of Iowa, Purdue University,  and Auburn University. Dr. Ephraim Massawe of Southeastern Louisiana University, chaired the workshop and stated, “Knowledge and information are the keys to support nano technology,” and stressed the importance of creating guidelines for handling nano particles. The two day workshop concluded with teams discussing case studies in which nanotechnology was used for site remediation. Participants were challenged to develop strategies for making the remediation activity more sustainable for human health and the environment.
